Dimensioned Floor Plan (Unity Village)

Design Thinking

What does Design thinking mean to you?
How are you using it in the current project? How about future projects?

Design thinking is about being creative, bringing many ideas to the table and showing it diagrams, sketches. Design thinking is about meeting the user needs and in order to success in the next step of your project. It makes you strive to the maximum and expanding every idea that you have to a different path and that what makes your project step outside the box and be uniques and creative. Sometimes you have to research, work in a team, and be open to explore different ideas in order to have the best design. In the current project we are working on a team. We are sketching, diagramming, putting many ideas in the table so we can explore them. Reading Chapter 6 on Ideation helped alot about the concept and for future projects it will help alot and also doing more sketches. Its not thinking outside the box anymore, its more about breaking that box or conidering there was not a box over there at all in any point of time. Design Thinking is about expanding what ideas you have and not putting boundaries in the human mind. Creativity does not have a limit.

Precedents

I like the design of lighting. A conversation starter while waiting at the lounge for your laundry at Unity Village? Maybe. The lounge, designed by Adam D. Tihany, provided a place for people to meet and talk under the Agatha lights, while drinking Veuve Clicquot champagne.

I like how these mailboxes(Stainless steel and Aluminum) are positioned and I like the light effect on them.

These bookshelves expand as you need more space.

Futuristic faucet? Maybe . It has aspect of modernism and i like the arch design.

I like the different varies of colors.

Design Concept(Statement)

A rubber band is made of flexible materials that can return to its original shape after being stretched or extended. How about we cut the rubber band and make it a long piece to expands it more and there is no defined space (circle)? We want to create a space that is inviting and harmonious that embraces the residents that live at Unity Village. Leaving the laundry area, lounge and mail room open would expand the space and make it more free flowing allowing the elderly, students, and immigrants to be more comfortable in the space. This will also allow them to interact in the space that is flexible. We will add a modern touch by using move able and recyclable furniture Allowing the daylight and artificial light to define the spaces in order to keep the space free flowing and flexible. We will use color keying to create a harmonious environment that is pleasant to all of the residents. It is easy to hold something together with a rubber band because it expands but by cutting it and making it a long piece it breaks the barrier of the defined spaced used which is the circle.

Inspiration Words:

Expansion Freedom Form
Elastic Pleasant Function
Harmonious Modernism Tropical
Free flowing Flexiable

Standards for Specific Interior Spaces

Shaping Interior Space by Roberto J. Rengel:Ideation

Ideation is one of the most critical and challanging for successful design. Early decisions made during that stage of design become the foundations upon which the rest of the design built. Good solutions to many types of problems require imagination and insight as well as balance and compromise. The concept of fit in design refers to the appropriate correspodence between a set of requirements or needs and the design solution that adressess them. Concepts start with no predetermined form. There is the overall decisions concerning placement, shape, and orientation of places are made during the ideation stage. The first basic ingredient for a meaningful design is a strong and fitting concept. Ideas or strategies that produces a fitting solution is a concept. There can be many concepts in a single project. The main concept helps to tie the entire project together by providing a dominant structure or idea that all othe design ideass adhere to. Organizational concepts are those that guide the arrangement of space. Character concepts are those related to style, image, or theme (less pragmatic and more elusive). The scheme you develop from your cocnept must represent an appropriate response to the project type, its particular programmatic requirements, and the context in which it occurs. During the concept generation stage a first-level order has to be esthablished. Enrichment is initiated during the conceptual stage also. Adding expression in design can be achieved and has to do with character, the materials chosen and the ways they are combined. Articulation refers to the modification of planes or volumes by their skillful subdivision into clearly expressed parts. Inflection means deviation from a given course, as when a straight scheme becomes angular or circular. The stages of concept generation are: Understanding the Project, Identifying Dominant Issues, Conceiving orkable Approaches, Externalizing the Approaches, Evaluating the Approaches, Consolidating Ideas and Choosing DIrection. To truly understand the essence of a project the designer needs to be able to identify its dominant issues. Descriptive scenarios are longer descriptions that paint a picture of an organization, its features and their effects. Anytime that is necessary to address qualitative issues or visualize three-deimensional form it is useful to turn to conceptual sketches instead of diagrams. One can not generate an organizational cocnept without committing to a ciculation system to link your spaces. Sketches work best for visualizing three-dimensional ideas while diagrams are the choice for visualizing organizations and relationships. The parti diagram represents the basic scheme, providing organizational structure to the project by expressing the essence of the solution without getting into detail. The functional diagram corresponds to the functional scheme. A good public diagram, whether a parti or functional diagram, possesses three basic virtues: clarity of content, clarity of intention, and economy means. One aspects of design is that, despite the constraints imposed by the requirenments of the project, there is ampe opportunity for personal interpretation. A quick approach to organizational concept generation consists of these five steps: Establish basic distribution of spaces, Establish main circulation, Articulate general solids, voids and screens, Articulate and/or inflect the scheme, Test the idea.

While rendering these views on Podium(a Plugin for SketchUp) I had some difficulty with the lights and getting the desired lighting in the space.

Measured Drawings

Measured drawings

Ever thought about renovating your home but do not know where to start? Let's schedule an appointment so we can take measured drawings ready to submit for permit to the city! Measured drawings are prepared in the process of measuring a building for future renovation or as historic documentation. They are created from on-site measurements. We can help you every step of the process!
